When You're Scared Of Going To The Gym...

When You're Scared Of Going To The Gym...

July 26, 20235 min read

Can I admit something to you?

I used to get scared a lot… I used to totally let fear control my life.

And, believe it or not, it even affected me when I was training or going to the gym!

Now, you may or may not know my background but I used to compete in Kickboxing and Muay Thai fights. The last thing you want in this situation is to be fearful but there I was, scared.

It wasn’t the fights that used to scare me though… It was going to the gym!

I used to feel dread every time it was time to put on my training gear, grab my bag and get into the car. Sometimes, it felt as though my biggest opponent wasn’t who I was going to be fighting in a few weeks time but the front door between me and the outside world.

I remember trying to come up with every excuse in my earlier days of training to not go to the gym.

Am I sure that feeling in my tummy isn’t some form of food poisoning? Is that achy muscle going to feel worse?

But here's the god’s honest truth, I took that fear, felt it and went anyway! For two main reasons.

Firstly, I knew that the fear was a lie… I knew that if I went, I would thank myself because I’d feel awesome after the session and that if I didn’t go, I’d only feel crap and regret and kick myself for not going

And secondly (And this one’s the most important one) - I knew that I had a goal that was really important for me to achieve. I knew why I wanted to do it and I knew I would need to get to the gym to achieve that goal!

Now, why am I sharing this with you?

I’m sharing this with you because I know sometimes you feel scared too. This is especially true if you’ve not even started your journey. Perhaps you’ve thought of booking a complimentary “NO SWEAT INTRO” session with us but put it off with an excuse as to why now isn’t the right time?

Or, you may have had every intention of coming to meet us and even booked an appointment but didn’t show up.

Look, I get it, it’s that voice inside your head, the voice of fear, that’s controlling you.

But let me tell you another thing about me that I’ve never really shared with anyone until now. When I looked at the results I was getting in my life (Or their lack of), I realised that the reason I was messing up so much was that I let fear control my life. And so, I decided to see a therapist to help me. After months of deep work, we uncovered the root causes of my fear and I no longer allow fear to control my life. As a result, we have a thriving personal training business and life is a lot better.

I just wish I had done this work earlier and applied it to my fighting career and I would have taken even greater risks and gotten even better rewards.

Here’s the thing though, Notice how I just said that I wish I had done it earlier? In my experience, nearly every person I train wishes they had started earlier too and I want to help you.

I want you to get great results in life, I want YOU to be in control of your life, not that little liar inside your head called fear.

This is why, when we started TFF Fitness, we wanted to create an environment that was totally non intimidating and non threatening. We wanted to come across as friendly as we could so we decided that every member of our gym would be like a family member to us. We would care about their goals as much as they do and help them achieve them.

So, just how do you overcome fear?

First of all, you have to understand one thing. Fear and Danger are two different things that feel similar.

If someone pulls a knife out on us when we're walking down the street, that's danger. It causes the same response as fear - A racing heart, blood rushing to the limbs, intense anxiety and alertness.

If you spot a good looking person at a bar and want to start a conversation but you're nervous, guess what, your heart will start racing, you'll feel the blood rushing to your limbs, you'll feel anxiety and even alertness.

But this time there's no danger, just your perceived fear that the person might say no and that you'll get rejected and that might hurt your ego for all of 20 minutes.

The physiological responses are exactly the same and our brain is programmed to keep us safe so we try to avoid the situation.

You now have to ask yourself, is what you're feeling afraid of actual danger or just something else?

Just like going to the gym, it's probably not dangerous in the slightest.

It's just outside of your comfort zone. But here's life's great little joke.. Everything that we truly desire is on the outside of your comfort zone. In order to achieve greatness, we must learn to get out of our comfort zones.

Again, I want to reiterate the fact that we've designed the TFF experience to be as non intimidating as possible.

When you come in for the first time, you'll be greeted with a smile and a coach that is there to help you realise your potential and the path you'll need to take in order to achieve your goals, NOT a pushy salesperson who is only interested in signing you up!
