Ever wanted to ask a fitness expert a question that you’ve been burning to ask? Well here’s your chance!
Ever since I started asking people what their questions were on Facebook, we’ve decided to launch the “Ask an expert” segment on our blog. This is your chance to ask one of our expert coaches a question on health, fitness, nutrition, mindset and lifestyle so you don’t have to do any guess work any more!
Today’s question comes from Hanan B from Dubai,
Hannan B asked, “When investing into a property there are only three things important: Location, location, location. When investing into your body and healthy lifestyle, what would be three most important areas?”
This is a great question Hannan because it is something we are passionate about when working with our clients at Team Fighting Fit. In fact, we have three areas which we strongly help our clients in to get them into the best shape and we’ve dubbed it our “Fitness Trifecta”
The three most important areas then are, Nutrition, Exercise and Recovery.
Nutrition: Nutrition is a massive component of fitness and optimal body composition. In fact, it may be the most important factor. Two independent studies at the Universities of Texas and Oklahoma in the USA showed that where experiments were conducted on groups that conducted only exercise, both groups only managed to lose 1.5 lbs of body fat in a 10 week period. This was with no dietary intervention.
What we can conclude from the above research is that diet plays a major role on body composition however, it should not be the only part of the puzzle.
Exercise: The right type of exercise is important too, whilst you can definitely lose weight through diet alone, the right type of exercise will stimulate your metabolism, optimise your hormone secretion, increase cardiovascular health, improve joint and bone health whilst also improving your own mood and self esteem. There are many different ways to exercise but for the most part, we recommend a combination of resistance and strength training with bouts of high intensity interval training and conditioning work for optimal results with body composition and strength. We like to mix weight training with combat sport conditioning drills at our facility to get the best results whilst keeping clients entertained and having fun!
Recovery: Recovery is often an overlooked part of fitness and it is why we’ve included in in our trifecta. Recovery for us not only includes your rest days but also looks at your sleep patterns and general lifestyle too. For example, if you’re chronically stressed out and not getting enough sleep, this will affect your bodies ability to grow and repair itself. The stress hormone cortisol will wreak havoc on your body by catabolizing muscle and promoting fat storage, particularly in the stomach area.
Optimum fitness is achieved when you’ve got all three areas above in check. Think of it as a three legged stool, with all three legs in check, you’ll be on a solid foundation and have a greater chance of seeing results faster.
Remember, your body grows at rest but you need to break down your body through training to stimulate the adaptations to training and that the right nutrition will facilitate growth and recovery. It’s all a very synergistic process and one that has to be addressed in its entirety in order to get the results you want.
